I bring to the practice of mediations, advocacy and negotiation skills developed over 28 years at the private Bar and, before that, 7 years in law firms. I am a AMDRAS (formerly NMAS) Nationally Accredited Mediator and a QCAT appointed Panel Mediator.

I have had a diverse practice and have acted in about equal measure for claimants and respondents and understand both sides of litigation. I have represented clients as an advocate in hundreds of successful negotiations (mediations, compulsory conferences and informal settlement negotiations) and have acted as a Mediator in a variety of diverse matters (direct torts, negligence, historical abuse etc.). I have represented clients in many trials and appeals over multiple jurisdictions and thoroughly understand both the potential pitfalls and potential advantages of trials. I understand the certainty that successful mediations bring to parties.

I have acted many times as an Investigator and Assessor for church bodies in respect of formal complaints - allegations of both historical and more contemporary sexual and other forms of abuse, and I am a Panel Member of the National Appeals and Reviews Panel (Australian Catholic Safeguarding Ltd: https://www.acsltd.org.au/panel-member-andrew-kitchin/).  Having mediated in such matters, there are particular sensitivities and nuances to be taken into account by the Mediator.

I have investigated claims of workplace harassment and my work for the Workers' Compensation Regulator (formerly Q-Comp), self-insured employers and WorkCover Queensland over several decades gives me a thorough understanding of workplace disputes.  I have 35 years of experience in CTP claims and a diverse practice over that time in claims against the Crown (Police, Ambulance, schools etc), occupier's liability, medical negligence and other tort claims and have acted for law firms of all types, from sole practitioners to the major national law firms.

I enjoy mediating matters to achieve settlements. I enjoy interacting with claimants and respondents from all walks of life. I strive to add value to mediations through a thorough knowledge of the issues and respectful consideration of the practical and emotional drivers of the litigation. I am flexible as to how I am to be briefed and where I mediate.
